GOOD NEWS: Daily wage in Metro Manila now at P512! [Read Full Article]
"The wage rates shall apply to all minimum wage earners in the private sector in the region regardless of their position, designation, or status of employment and irrespective of the method of which they are paid," said the NCR wage board.
MORE than six million workers in Metro Manila will get a P21 wage increase starting next month after the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board-National Capital Region (RTWPB-NCR) agreed to raise the P491 daily minimum salary to P512.
The wage board said the new rates shall apply to “all minimum wage earners in the private sector in the region, regardless of their position, designation, or status of employment and irrespective of the method of which they are paid.”
The minimum daily wage in NCR for non-agricultural workers will now be at P512 from the prevailing P481, upon the effectivity of the Wage Order No. NCR-21 which was approved in September.
Wage hike petitioner Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) filed a P184 wage increase petition last June 6 on top of the existing P491 to enable workers and their families cope with rising prices of goods and services.
“The P21 increase in daily wage remains insufficient for families to cope with rising prices of goods and increasing costs of goods. P21 is only 4.27% of the current P491. So it obviously did not lift workers out of poverty. Workers who helped built a high economic growth of 6.9% average Gross Domestic Product do not deserve this very small amount,” Tanjusay said.
Included in the P512 minimum wage for the non-agricultural sector are the P502 basic wage and the P10 cost of living allowance (COLA).
In a statement, ALU Spokesman Alan Tanjusay said the P21 pay increase remains inadequate to meet the needs of minimum-waged earners to escape poverty. “The P21 increase in daily wage remains insufficient for families to cope with rising prices of goods and increasing costs of goods. The P21 is only 4.27% of the current P491. So it obviously did not lift workers out of poverty. Workers do not deserve this very small amount,” Tanjusay said.
“We have no other choice but to come and ask President Duterte to grant our long-standing request to provide a P500 monthly CCT-like cash voucher subsidy to minimum-waged workers, who helped build our high economic growth,” Tanjusay said
The last time minimum wage earner got a significant hike was in 1989 when President Cory Aquino gave a P25 daily across-the-board wage increase nationwide.
Last year, the ALU-TUCP filed a P154 wage hike petition for workers in the National Capital Region but only P10 was granted..
For other private sector works, the minimum wage is at P475, also an increase of P21 from P444.
"The wage rates per day prescribed in this order shall apply to all minimum wage earners in the private sector in the region, regardless of their position, designation or status of employment and irrespective of the method which they are paid," the order read.
The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board announced a P21 daily wage increase on top of the existing P491 daily minimum wage for more than six-million minimum-waged workers in 17 cities and municipalities in Metro Manila.
