"Separation of Senate probe on ‘tara’ list" -Sen. Trillanes


Those people who allegedly involved in the said corrupt practice have committed possible violations of Republic Act No. 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. according to Sen.Trillanes.

Trillanes filed Senate Resolution No. 474 directing the ways and means committee to conduct the probe on the “‘tara’ system supposedly perpetuated by different players in connivance with numerous officials of the BOC.”

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV is seeking a separate Senate committee investigation into the possible violations of Customs officials allegedly receiving “tara” or bribes in order to create new laws to stop the corruption in the Bureau of Customs (BOC).

Last week, Senator Panfilo Lacson accused former Commissioner

Nicanor Faeldon, along with other Customs officials of receiving payoffs from “big players” at the BOC.

The senator also named bribe givers, bag men, and collectors at the BOC based on what he described as “vetted and cross-matched” lists provided to his office.

“It is therefore imperative upon the Senate to study and formulate remedial legislation to strengthen existing laws and/or correct implementation loopholes in order to finally carry out reforms in the BOC, and to restore the confidence of the public in the said bureau that carries out such a relevant revenue-generating function,” he added.

In the resolution, Trillanes cited the claim of Customs fixer Mark Taguba that he pays his BOC contact P27,000 per container van as tara to skip customs inspection. Taguba was among those charged by the National Bureau of Investigation in connection with the P6.4-billion shabu shipment that gave customs the slip in May.
